An Embassy Without A State
We cordially invite you to what promises to be a fascinating event, focusing on the Lithuanian diplomatic service in the United Kingdom in the 1930s and 1940s.
After Lithuania’s loss of independence in 1940, her diplomatic mission in London carried on its activities. Despite legal and economic difficulties, the legation, headed first by Bronius Kazys Balutis (1880-1967) and later by Vincas Balickas (1904-1996), throughout all the period of occupation ensured that Lithuania’s voice was heard in the United Kingdom.
The historians Dr. Asta Petraitytė Briedienė of Vytautas Magnus University (Kaunas) and Prof. Geoffrey Swain, Emeritus Professor at the University of Glasgow will acquaint us with the political, historical and legal context of the time, as well as an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at the work of the Lithuanian diplomatic service in the United Kingdom.
A discussion dedicated to the memory of Bronius Kazys Balutis (1880 – 1967), Envoy of Lithuania to the United Kingdom from 1934 to 1967, will take place on 25 May 2017 at 6:30 pm at the Embassy of Lithuania.
