Ambassador visits Scotland

The Lithuanian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė has started her two day visit to Scotland.

On 4th June the diplomat met with the representatives of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce with a view to strengthening bilateral economic Lithuanian-Scottishcooperation. “Over the last couple of years the UK-Lithuania trade has been gathering pace therefore an increasing number of British companies choose Lithuania to open their new Centres for Shared Services. I encourage Scottish entrepreneurs to follow the pattern and opt for Lithuania as their next investment destination”, the Ambassador said.

The diplomat also met with Rt. Hon. Sadie Docherty, Lord Provost of Glasgow and visited theLife Science Research Centre of Glasgow University. In her speech at the Centre the Ambassador noted that the European MFF 2014-2020 opened new possibilities for cooperation, especially in the field of Research and Development. In this regard, the diplomat encouraged Scottish and Lithuanian Researchers to work together in implementing joint projects under the EU’s Horizon 2020 R&D Programme. In addition,in order to continue with the newly-established links, Asta SkaisgirytėLiauškienė invited the Glaswegian scholars to attend ‘Life Science Baltics 2014’conference and B2B partnership event in September in Vilnius.

At 5 PM Glasgow University students and staff as well members of the Scottish Lithuanian Community gathered at the Senate room to listen to the Ambassador’s speech on the outcome of the Lithuanian Presidency of the Council of the EU. The diplomat delivered a public lecture titled 'Beyond Lithuanian EU Presidency: Quo Vadis Europe’ which was followed by the informal discussion with Lithuanians living and studying in Glasgow.

Tomorrow the Lithuanian Ambassador heads to Edinburgh. The diplomat will attend a joint discussion organized by the Royal Institute of Architects in Scotland and the Lithuanian Union of Architects. The bodies are expected to sign a treaty of cooperation later that day. Before returning to London, the Ambassador will meet Rt. Hon. Donald Wilson, Lord Provost of Edinburgh, to discuss cultural cooperation between Lithuanian and Scottish capital cities.
