AMBASSADOR VISITS MANCHESTER
The Lithuanian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė concluded her two–day visit to the city of Manchester on Thursday. During her visit the Ambassador met with representatives of local authorities as well as Mancunian entrepreneurs with a view to strengthening economic links between the UK and Lithuania. The visit to Manchester also included a discussion organised by the leaders of the city‘s main religious communities and academics as well as a round of meetings with Lithuanian nationals living in greater Manchester.
Speaking at the conference organized by the local think tank New Economy, the Ambassador shared her insights on the outcome of the Lithuania‘s Presidency of the Council of the EU and discussed issues related to the broader EU agenda. „We must do everything possible to maintain the EU financial consolidation. At the same time we have to find additional means to fight youth unemployment and stimulate growth“, the Lithuanian Ambassador told participants. She also stressed the importance of Energy Security as well as Eastern Partnership in EU politics.
Moreover, local businessmen were introduced to the investment climate of Lithuania. Over the last couple of years the UK-Lithuania trade has been growing rapidly therefore an increasing number of British companies choose Lithuania to open their new Centers for Shared Services.
During her meeting with academics of Manchester University, Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė invited British and Lithuanian scholars to work together in implementing common projects. „New MFF opens new possibilities for cooperation, especially in the field of Research and Development“, the diplomat noted.
Before returning to London, the Lithuanian Ambassador met with the Lithuanian community living in Manchester and encouraged them to be active in the forthcoming Presidential elections and elections to the European Parliament. „We may be living abroad but it is our moral obligation to have our say on the future of Lithuania“, the diplomat said.
