Ambassador pays tribute to John A. Packer, the late Lithuania‘s Honorary Consular in Wales
On 22 January, 2015 the Lithuanian Ambassador to the United Kingdom Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė attended a commemorative ceremony in Cardiff held to honour John Anthony Packer, the late Lithuania’s Honorary Consular in Wales. The diplomat together with the representatives of the Association of Honorary Consuls in Wales, in the presence of J. A. Parker family and friends, unveiled a commemorative plaque and planted a memorial tree at picturesque Roath Park of the Welsh capital.
“A year ago today Lithuania lost its loyal and kind-hearted friend. John Anthony Packer contributed enormously to the strengthening of the Lithuanian-Welsh ties, especially in the fields of culture and education. On behalf of the Lithuanian people I express my deepest gratitude to John’s family”, ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė Liauškienė said.
John Anthony Packer born on 22 05 1939 became an Honorary Consular of Lithuania in Wales in 2001. In 2007 he successfully mediated the return of a number of important documents to the Lithuanian Catholic Church; he was also active in promoting the cooperation between Swansea and Kaunas universities. In 2014 John A. Parker was awarded with the so-called Star of Diplomacy, the highest award granted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania.
