25th Anniversary of restored Independence of Lithuania commemorated in Portugal
November 24-26, 2015. Ambassador of Lithuania Asta Skaisgirytė is paying a working visit to Portugal. The visit includes meetings with the representatives of the Portuguese Government and Parliament as well as with the European Commission Representation in Portugal. The Ambassador has also attended the opening of the Lithuanian Honorary Consulate in Lisbon.
During her visit she presented the Lithuanian Armed Forces medals to the officers of the Portuguese army in recognition of their successful mission in Lithuania in the capacity of NATO Response force.
“Portugal is an important NATO ally for Lithuania contributing to the regional security in the Baltics. In 2014 the Portuguese fighter jets patrolled at Air policing mission in Zokniai. A reconnaissance coy of the Portuguese army participated in a rotation exercise in Lithuania this year. We hope that the new Government will continue their support for the Baltic security.” Ambassador Asta Skaisgirytė noted at the meeting with the representatives of Ministry of Defence.
During the visit the Ambassador also met with the Lithuanian Community in Portugal and attended a special event dedicated to the 25th anniversary of restoration of Lithuania’s Independence. The event which was held in cooperation with the European Commission Representation in Portugal included the opening of the exhibition The Road to Freedom and the screening of the documentary How we played the revolution. The exhibition and the film recapture the pivotal moments that shaped the history of Lithuania in its struggle for freedom in the late 1980s.
