THE BRITISH-LITHUANIAN SOCIETY Invites you to a talk by Professor Antony Polonsky, Brandeis University,"What is a Litvak?” on Tuesday 19th March 2013, 6.30 for 7.00 pm (To help with security requirements please arrive punctually) at The Lithuanian Embassy, 2 Bessborough Gardens, London SW1A 2JE. Antony Polonsky is Albert Abramson Professor of Holocaust Studies at Brandeis University and the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. He is chair of the editorial board of Polin: Studies in Polish Jewry. His most recent work is The Jews in Poland and Russia volume 1, 1350 to 1881; volume 2 1881 to 1914; volume 3 1914 to 2008 (Oxford, 2010. 2012).
He is a member of the British-Lithuanian Society and has written for the Society’s journal Tiltas.
On the lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania a very specific form of Jewish identity developed, marked by rationalism, opposition to hasidism and frequently social radicalism. Antony Polonsky discusses how this identity emerged and how it evolved from the eighteenth century to the present.
