On 28 May, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gabrielius Landsbergis, received Mihai Popșoi, the Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova, who was paying a working visit to Lithuania. The meeting focused on Moldova’s readiness to start negotiations on EU membership, security challenges facing the region, and bilateral relations between Lithuania and Moldova.

The Foreign Minister ensured Lithuania’s consistent support for Moldova’s European integration. “Despite Russia’s ambitions to undermine Moldova’s progress and the consequences of the war against Ukraine, Moldova is implementing key reforms. We aim to start real EU membership talks with Moldova and Ukraine this June by convening intergovernmental conferences,” said Landsbergis.

Lithuania’s Foreign Minister congratulated Moldova on signing a security and defence partnership with the EU. In addition, the Foreign Ministers discussed implementing development cooperation projects. “Lithuania is ready to share its transformation experience with Moldova and help prepare for the intensive process of EU enlargement negotiations,” said Landsbergis. Lithuania provides expert support to Moldova in the transposition of EU law and assists in creating the information incident analysis centre.

At the end of the meeting, the heads of Lithuania’s and Moldova’s diplomacy underlined both countries' strong determination to cooperate, assist Ukraine, and strengthen security in the region.

During the visit, two intergovernmental agreements were signed between Lithuania and Moldova on technical and financial cooperation and the exchange and reciprocal protection of classified information.
